Empowering Senior Mobility: Doral’s Innovative Transit Initiative

A significant stride towards accessible mobility for seniors was achieved as the City of Doral approved Resolution 24-5426, signaling the commencement of an On-Demand Pilot Transit Program. Universally endorsed during a council meeting, this initiative seeks to serve individuals aged 65 and above, aligning with the mayor’s commitment to expanding public transportation for senior residents.

Operated by Freebee, the six-month pilot program is set to commence in approximately 30 days. Serving the entire city, not just downtown, it features two vehicles providing 40 hours of weekly rides. This free service allows pick-ups from residential areas, connecting seniors to 27 key locations, including parks, government and cultural centers, police stations, pharmacies, supermarkets, hospitals, and Our Lady of Guadalupe church.

Mayor Christi Fraga, in an interview with Doral Family Journal, emphasized that the program’s pilot nature is to gauge demand and necessity. The initiative complements the expanded Trolley system and addresses the needs expressed by Silver Club members who find the service convenient due to changes in parking, vehicle costs, and the constraints of family members’ busy schedules.

Project Journey Unveiled

The effort to enhance the transit system began with public input on the need for expansion. Discussions at the City Council meeting on August 9, 2023, indicated a collective interest in moving forward. Subsequently, on December 6, 2023, the Department of Public Works Transportation Division presented the project’s findings, endorsing Freebee as the preferred provider for reasons such as ADA-compliant electric vehicles and robust monitoring capabilities.

Following extensive research and discussions, the January 10, 2024, council meeting saw the approval of the resolution. The decision followed 59 surveys conducted with seniors to identify their most visited places and specific needs. The program was initially proposed with 70 hours and three vehicles, but council members opted for a conservative start with 40 hours and two vehicles, leaving room for adjustments based on public response and additional funding sources.

“We’ve studied this extensively, and the Freebee program is the most convenient and efficient option. Participants can even share rides with their neighbors,” Mayor Fraga emphasized.

How to Access the Service

To benefit from this service, interested individuals must download the Freebee app, providing their home address for verification within city boundaries. Those unable to use the app can call 305-482-1284 or 855-918-3733 for ADA assistance.
