Pioneering Condominium Governance Education: FIU Business Launches Innovative Training Program
Florida International University's College of Business (FIU Business) has introduced the Condominium Board Member Training Certificate Program, a comprehensive online initiative designed for newly elected condominium board members and condominium owners.
Following the 2021 Surfside building collapse and the resulting safety reform legislation, FIU Business Executive Education developed this program to address critical topics including:
- Leadership and governance
- Reserve studies
- Management of major repairs
- Collaboration with legal, financial, and insurance professionals
A key reason for the program's relevance is the requirement that condominium associations complete a Structural Integrity Reserve Study by January 2025. This study determines the funding needed for future structural repairs, highlighting the importance of proper financial planning and governance.
Dean William Hardin emphasized the value of informed stakeholders:
“Owners, condominium board members, and managers all play crucial roles in effectively overseeing and managing a condominium project. FIU Business' professional education equips each party with the knowledge to fulfill their duties, comprehend property operations, and uphold the expected quality of life.â€
FIU Business is the first major university in Florida to offer comprehensive education focused specifically on condominium ownership and management. The State of Florida has officially incorporated the program into the training requirements for condominium board members.
The self-paced curriculum is led by Patrick Hohman, a veteran condominium board president, professional condominium association manager, and author of Condos, Townhomes and Homeowner Associations: How to Make Your Investment Safer. The program is designed to provide participants with a thorough understanding of condominium governance and management.
Program Structure
The curriculum is divided into three sections:
- Proactive, Hands-On and Well-Organized Management
- Financial Strength: Now and Into the Future
- Leading People and Understanding Property Owners
This structure provides a comprehensive approach to condominium governance, covering operational, financial, and leadership responsibilities.
Hohman notes that condominium associations face unique challenges as nonprofit corporations. The program aims to strengthen financial stability, reduce leadership turnover, and equip stakeholders with the knowledge needed for effective and sustainable condominium management.
As condominium regulations continue to evolve, FIU Business' Condominium Board Member Training Certificate Program offers valuable guidance and expertise for board members, owners, and managers seeking to navigate governance responsibilities with confidence.
